Tucked away in North Central Florida, just 90 miles south of the Georgia border is the town of Gainesville. Located between two bodies of water, the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico; as well as being minutes from numerous lakes and springs, water sports and leisure play a key role in the way of life here. The town is also located about an hour and a half from three major cities, north of us is Jacksonville, to the south west is Orlando, and to the south we have Tampa.
Gainesville is divided into four quadrants NE, SE, NW, and SW. Within the city limits there is a population of 114,000. The city of Gainesville is a culturally diverse town and there are nationally known art museums, natural history museums, and botanical gardens, with theaters and play houses which feature world class plays and concerts.
The University of Florida accepts roughly 52,000 students a year, this historic campus is spread over 2,000 acres and features 900 buildings. The school was founded in 1856 and was primarily a school of agricultural studies. Nowadays UF leads the nation in the medical research field as well as agricultural studies. UF is also Gainesville's largest employer, employing over 40% of the workforce.
In addition to the high level of academia, the University of Florida also offers a multi-Championship sports programs and a legion of fans. The Florida football team has played in and won three National Championships (1996, 2006, 2008) The UF basketball team in their own right has also recently won two of their own (2006 & 2007). In addition to National Championships the UF sports program has a plethora of SEC Titles.
